Facts can puncture fear of air bags
Article Abstract:
Data from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety shows that driver-side air bags reduce deaths in frontal collisions by 26% among drivers who employed seat belts and about 32% among unbelted drivers. Passenger air bags are also cutting mortalities in frontal collisions by about 15% among right front passengers who wear seat belts and by about 22% among those who do not use seat belts. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that the combination of an air bag plus a lap shoulder belt cuts the risks of serious head injury by 75% versus a 38% decline for belts alone.

Cartoon justice
Article Abstract:
Forensic animation entails the use of computer animation technology to illustrate in a court of law how an event happened. This technique has not yet been totally accepted in the legal arena but is slowly gaining popularity. The case regarding an accident in New Orleans' 17th St. Canal where two boaters crashed into construction equipment in the canal illustrates its importance. The contractor's defense lawyers used forensic animation resulting to a settlement of $15,000. The New Orleans Sewage and Water Authority neglected this and had to pay $800,000.

Air skirmish
Article Abstract:
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety recently defected from the industry's previously unanimous position in favor of mandatory air bags for automobiles. The group changed its position only as a concession to the current anti-airbag hysteria, fearing that the present climate could lead to a repeal of the standing air bag mandate. The Institute supports amendment proposals to that mandate that would make it easier for people to have their air bags disconnected or equipped with an on/off switch.
