Article Abstract:

The decision of the California state Supreme Court which rendered Admiral Insurance Co liable to reimburse the environmental cleanup costs incurred by Montrose Chemical Corp of California has caused a backlash. Insurance companies throughout California are upset over the 1995 decision which made them potentially liable for environmental impairment liability coverage. Montrose was charged by the EPA for polluting the soil at several of the company's facilities. Montrose turned to Admiral Insurance Co to compensate for legal costs which the latter initially turned down prior to the case.

Barnett decision sparks battles and questions from agents, OCC

Article Abstract:

The Barnett Banks vs. Nelson case has opened a series of new legal battles concerning the regulation of banking activities in the insurance sphere. Although the Supreme Court ruled that states cannot bar a national bank from selling insurance from a regional headquarters, banks may be regulated by the office of the Comptroller of the Currency instead. A new financial services bill is being debated currently in the House of Representatives.
