Nissan Mutual falls, Japan's first in 50 years

Japan's Nissan Mutual Life Insurance Co, which was ordered for liquidation, has lost an estimated $1.6 billion on bad investments, mostly due to very low domestic interest rates. The company's 200 billion yen capital deficit from stock holding-losses and unrecoverable loans. Nissan's failure is the first in 50 years for Japan. The problem of low interest rates is affecting all Japanese insurers and smaller companies such as Nissan's are the most vulnerable without sufficient unrealized capital gains to rely on.
