New York state of mind: former New York Insurance Superintendent is heading back to the private sector
Article Abstract:
The insurance industry has changed dramatically since Edward J. Mahl was appointed superintendent of the New York State Department of Insurance in Dec 1994. During his tenure with the state department, Mahl was influential in changing laws which restricted how life insurance companies spend their money and compensate agents, and in loosening regulations regarding risk-retention groups and captives. Mahl believes that New York is the only state which can function effectively without accreditation from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners.

When to blow whistle on insurance fraud cases
Article Abstract:
There are several reasons to expose insurance fraud. A case that is of major financial proportions should be exposed. Some cases will enable a prosecutor to try a much larger case. There are also prosecutors who enjoy publicity and media attention. A case needs to be presented so that it will be useful to a prosecutor. There are business and legal risks for the insurance company but these issues are precluded by financial benefits for the insurance company and the deterrent effect on criminals.
