Playing for keeps: insurers are learning that luring seniors to their Medicare HMOs is only half the battle - holding on to them may be the hardest part
Article Abstract:
Disenrollment among senior plan members is a major problem for Medicare health maintenance organizations (HMOs) since they have to bear the extra costs involved in plan switching. Hence, HMOs have to take a proactive stance in keeping their members which means analyzing the rationale behind the disenrollment, creating retention incentives such as health club discounts or frequent flyer miles, and improving access to health professionals. Enhancement of access to health information as well as managing customer feedback are also recommended.
