An interview of five different heads of life/health insurance companies yields a general picture of the educational and career training as well as of the personal traits that are required of the industry's leading executives. The five executives interviewed agree that a solid legal background, a diversified occupational progression within the industry and a willingness to change companies are some of the common elements that led them to their present positions.

Underwriters' role should be expanded; companies benefit from involving underwriters in program design and case management from start to finish

Underwriters are becoming more involved in the process of selecting life insurance policies for small- and medium-sized businesses. Underwriters's job involves more program design and case advising, while case underwriting is becoming a smaller part of the underwriter's job. More pro-active responsibilities of underwriters developed in response to the needs of business clients.
