Running out of the clock
Article Abstract:
Insurers are currently scrambling to meet the Dec 31, 1998 deadline for converting their computer systems to avoid the year 2000 problem. Adding to this challenge is the difficulty of converting rare computer languages and the need to ensure that the systems of companies they do business with are year 2000-compliant. Experts also believe that these efforts are straining the resources of insurers which could cause the downfall of small- and medium-sized firms and that insurers who convert their systems the soonest will gain an edge over competitors.
