Article Abstract:
Australian insurance companies have ended their ruinous price war and, as of 1991, many insurers are charging higher premiums. Furthermore, new laws requiring increased minimum capital may force many smaller insurers out of business, thus decreasing downward pressure on premiums. In New South Wales, the government has exited the automobile insurance business and many private carriers are competing in this newly privatized sector. Other various news about the Australian insurance industry is presented.

Is in-house counsel a cost-effective move?
Article Abstract:
Insurance firms that hire in-house counsel are seeking a less expensive way to get advice. However, a firm hiring its own lawyers may find that the price difference between in-house and outside counsel is narrowing. Lawyers fees are dropping during the 1990s. However, in many firms with inhouse counsel, more complex cases are still being handled by independent lawyers, increasing the company's expense for legal advice.
