Migrating Eastward
Article Abstract:
Surplus lines stamping offices only came into existence about 50 years ago. In fact, at the present time, only 2 of 11 operate east of the Mississippi. The stamping office's primary function is to review and record surplus lines policies and to disseminate information about these policies. It also assists brokers with insurance regulations and tax laws. Stamping offices are charged with overseeing broker activity but are not allowed to take disciplinary action. Offices are funded by a 'stamping' fee based on a percentage of reported premiums.

Smaller but stronger?
Article Abstract:
The property and casualty insurance will undergo consolidation over the next few years, but there is considerable disagreement over what form this consolidation will take. Some think that consolidation will be limited to certain lines. County mutual insurers, reinsurers and national agency writers are likely candidates. Others disagree, claiming that industrywide consolidation will reduce the number of insurers by 90% over the next 20 years and that most of this attrition will occur through insolvencies.
