The insurance industry may be adversely affected by the by the growing number of lawsuits that are being filed against tobacco companies. Up to now, the insurance industry has avoided liability for judgements against tobacco companies, but many expect tobacco to create the next liability crisis for the insurance industry. While there is a disinclination on the part of tobacco companies to draw insurers into their legal battles, this may change if tobacco companies' liabilities mount significantly.

Technology advancements have made it possible for risk underwriting to be handled by point-of-sales systems outside the company. A point-of-sale system consists of underwriting modules that could be quickly put together to create an insurance policy. Such modules could be used in about 95% of insurance applications. Point-of-sales systems could be located in a variety of places, such as on the Internet, in an agency management system or in a kiosk.
