Where salary-based employee contributions fail
Article Abstract:
Many employers use salary-based employee contributions for health care benefits. They explain that the approach encourages higher-paid employees to help subsidize employees who cannot afford to pay contributions. However, salary-based contribution also poses several problems. For one, it fails to consider important factors such as employee investment income and spouse salary. It may also disrupt the company's flexible benefit program. In addition, the company may not have a sufficient number of highly-compensated employees to allow suitable subsidization.
