A view from Asia: The north Korean missile threat and missile defense in the context of South Korea's changing national security debate
Article Abstract:
The present state of the national security debate in South Korea in the context of rapid democratization, the confluence of political and strategic forces that have combined to create unprecedented change in South Korea's security perceptions is presented. The extent to which South Korean views have shifted since the end of the Cold War is illustrated as the missile defense issue continues to remain as a relatively minor facet of South Korea's debate.

Disarmament, deterrent and denial strategies address different sources of conflict whereas it suggests that policy advocates often defend one strategy as the basis of US defense policy. The complexity of the contemporary security environment suggests that an especially unstable moment in world politics is being experienced at a time when various security options compete for policy dominance.
