China's cautious new pragmatism in the Middle East
Article Abstract:
China's Middle East policy favors the demands of modernization over those of geostrategy and is therefore unlikely to cause global confrontation or question US hegemony. China has stressed the need for peace and stability in the region to facilitate optimum economic development since the 1991 Gulf War. However, there are contradictions between its endorsement of Iran's policy and the peace process. Moreover, China has shunned an anti-US stance in the region to prevent alienation from US business and protect its vital interests in other areas, such as Taiwan.

The strategic implications of Asia's economic crisis
Article Abstract:
The economic crisis which struck Asia beginning in Jul 1997 was caused by three main factors. This includes the excessive level of foreign, and particularly short-term, investment and inadequate risk management and commercial-banking controls. In light of the economic blow, serious doubts have surfaced in the region concerning the benefits of economic interdependence and globalization. The crisis is predicted to cause a shift in the regional balance of power that favors China and a possible collapse in Indonesia's political order.

The strategic implications of China's public order crisis
Article Abstract:
High level public disorder in 1993 and in early 1994 threatened China's intention of becoming a world military and economic power. Public order crises compelled the political leadership to adopt a series of authoritarian measures and to use the Peoples Liberation Army to meet domestic needs. Foreign governments saw China's domestic problems as a sign of weakness, making China's aggressive foreign policy an issue that did not need to be addressed as a very high priority.
