Democratizing with ethnic divisions: a source of conflict?

Article Abstract:

This article examines conditions under which political violence may occur in ethnically diverse nations, focusing on levels of democracy, economic development and political change. The author investigates suggestions that economic modernization and democratization encourage ethnic competition and increase the possiblities for political violence by examining data from 128 countries between 1948-1982, finding that ethnically diverse nations are only prone to increased political violence under certain political conditions.
