From nation-building to state-building: The geopolitics of development, the nation-state system and the changing global order

Article Abstract:

The need to put the contemporary nation-building (state-building) effort in post-Saddam Iraq and elsewhere in historical perspective is emphasized. To facilitate better and more critical engagement with contemporary nation-building and wider crisis of the nation-state system of the early 21st century there is a need for broad qualitative analysis that historicizes and de-routinises nation-building and international system of nation-states.

All roads led to and from Iraq: The Long War and the transformation of the nation-state system

Article Abstract:

The Middle East has disintegrated into a mess of insurgency, counter-insurgency, terrorism and sectarian civil war. The Long War is between nation-states in conflict with other nation-states, and also nation-states against Jihadist networks, suggesting that the 'real' Long War may be a struggle within the 'Muslim world' as seen in the Iraq War rather than that between the 'West' and 'Islam'.

Beyond state-building: Global governance and the crisis of the nation-state system in the 21st century

Article Abstract:

Some of the wider themes sketched out at the beginning and in various contributions are reiterated at the same time showing ways to move beyond nation-building or state-building, as they are presently constituted. There is a profound need to look for and articulate new critical creative paths to achieving prosperity and peace in the post-cold war era.
