Ideology in context: explaining Sendero Luminoso's tactical escalation
Article Abstract:
This article discusses the tactics of Peru's Sendero Luminoso (Shining Path) during the 1980s and 1990s, focusing on Sendero's escalation of political violence after democratization and its attacks on members of Peru's Marxist left by drawing on political opportunity theory, organizational competition theory and the decline of protest cycles. The author concludes that democratization can create more strife if small, violence prone organizations fear marginalization due to the electoral process.
