Is there an 'Asian Way'?

Article Abstract:

The Asian Way represents a unique amalgamation of cultural and value systems that identifies the regional communities of East Asia. While there may exist an element of truth in this assertion, the argument that the Asian Way is a binding force in regional, political, and economic emergence fails to convince. The ASEAN Regional Forum, for instance, combines Asian and Western ideologies to address common interests of mutual interdependence and security. Many East Asian regimes, in a bid to legitimize their rule, are increasingly resorting to the Asian Way strategy of development.

Asian values and Asian success

Article Abstract:

Governor of Hong Kong Chris Patten feels that equating Asian economic success with Asian values, as embodied in the Confucian tradition of familial authority, is unacceptable. Liberal democratic values such as faith in progress, economic liberty, and free trade have generated economic growth and social transformation in many Asian countries such as Hong Kong and Japan. However, these mechanics are also at work in other parts of the world. They are thus universal values rather than exclusively Asian ones.
