Iranian Islam and the Faustian bargain of western modernity

Article Abstract:

Western intellectuals should not brush off Iran's surprising interpretation of the downfall of the Soviet Union as a prelude to a Western demise. This interpretation is backed by Iranian intellectuals' belief that the political 'East' and 'West' inherited the rational universalism and secular humanism of the Enlightenment. Such a belief reflects the fact that many non-Westerners differ from their Western counterparts in their view of space and time, culture, material wealth, social values and moral principles.
