Colonial style and post-colonial ethnic conflict in Africa

Article Abstract:

The influence of British and French colonialism on African ethnic relations is examined. Topics include the decentralized British rule, which created a climate of unranked ethnic stratification; the centralized French rule, which created a ranked system; the influence of historical colonialism on contemporary ethnic conflict; and the conclusion that the British colonial policies are more associated with subsequent ethnic conflict than the French.
