Military power and political influence
Article Abstract:
Very mixed views continue to be expressed about the use of force in circumstances where there does not seem to be an immediate danger of war. Within this context, it is important to consider the influence held by military power when it is only latent, rather than when it is clearly being used. Military power can play a significant role in emphasizing a long-term commitment to stability in situations where the participants do not intend to go to war or even threaten war. Military power will most frequently take on this role in relatively settled relationships.

What are armed forces for? The changing nature of military roles in Europe
Article Abstract:
The changing nature of military roles in the European armed forces is increasingly challenging long-held assumptions about what armed forces are for and how they should be structured and organized. It is argued that these changes have not primarily occurred in response to an objective, functional reassessment of the nature of the threat as is assumed in much of the civil-military relations literature.
