China's military posture and the new economic geopolitics
Article Abstract:
Economic growth now forms a key element of China's national-policy programme. This has meant that industrial and technology planning has shifted its focus away from merely weapons-focused targets, taking a much wider view. The main areas of consideration within the debate about Chinese defence policy are now long-range balance-of-power issues in the Asian-Pacific region and the possibility of China using its military forces to acquire resources needed for long-term economic growth. It is clear that China is committed to its military strength, but is at present focusing on cooperation and strategic partnership.

China and a fissile material production cut-off
Article Abstract:
The success of the convention on prohibition of fissile material production largely depends on China's participation. The production cut-off can become an important nuclear disarmament measure if China agrees to sign the treaty. China's decision will depend on its nuclear-weapons program and its security concerns regarding the weapons programs of other countries. The United States and Russia can encourage China's participation by keeping their stocks under international safeguards and reducing their nuclear weapons.

The PLA and the Chinese economy: The effect of involvement
Article Abstract:
The involvement of the Peoples Liberation Army (PLA) in the Chinese economy since the mid-1980's poses a threat to the army's abilities as a military force. The purpose of this involvement was to gather more money for the betterment of the military, but it resulted in the loss of discipline and an increase of corruption in the army. Serious steps have to be taken to avoid the danger posed by these non-professionals in the military.
