Globalization and economic disparities in East and Southeast Asia: new dilemmas

Article Abstract:

This article evaluates four East and Southeast Asian economies severely hit by the financial crisis of 1997, examining the connection between deregulation and liberalization on poverty reduction and income inequality. The author asserts that the role of the state is not coming to an end due to globalization, finding that some states are promoting globalization while others are resisting it; and finally, it is suggested that states should revitalize their regulatory role, placing greater attention to social issues and using a more national approach to managing the economy.
