Perceptions of the War in Bosnia
Article Abstract:
Four new books on the war in Bosnia-Herzegovina provide highly personal accounts of Europe's most ferocious conflict since World War II. Two of the books are written by correspondents of the New York Times and provide moving accounts of the human suffering that took place in Bosnia. Both books, one by Roger Cohen and the other by Chuck Sudetic, are also highly critical of Western policy before the Dayton accords that ended the war. The other two books are written by US peace negotiator Richard Holbrooke and UNPROFOR head Gen. Michael Rose.

The folly of partition
Article Abstract:
Radha Kumar's book 'Divide and Fall? Bosnia in the Annals of Partition' discusses the British Army's primary preoccupation with the consequences of partition in Bosnia and Northern Ireland. The US considered the acceptance of partition as the main shortcoming of the 1993 Vance-Owen peace plan. However, US-sponsored peace plans, including the Mar 1994 Washington Agreement or Federation Agreement, were also seen as ineffective and, in some ways, worse than the Vance-Owen peace plan.

Under western eyes: the fate of Bosnia
Article Abstract:
The position of Bosnia is one of the key unresolved issues of the wars in the former Yugoslavia. It will only be possible to establish a reasonably effective political order in Bosnia if the Bosnians are able to position themselves in a European order that allows for a mainly Muslim Bosnia. Bosnia will only gain a comparative advantage over Croatia and Serbia through an open political and social structure, liberal religious practice and a pluralist society.
