Russia and economic integration in the CIS

Article Abstract:

The economic integration of former Soviet countries picked up in 1996 when Russia formed a customs union with Kyrgyzstan, Belarus and Kazakhstan. The Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) formed soon after the disintegration of Soviet Union, had failed to retain the economic union. Russia became oriented to economic reforms and appeasement of the west to integrate itself into the world economy. It is reorienting its policy to promote CIS integration, although the direct and indirect costs are high. Western policy should play an active role in shaping this interaction.

Russia and the West: towards renewed geopolitical rivalry?

Article Abstract:

The need for greater economic and military cooperation between Russia and the West is increasingly being felt. The West must take steps to create an environment for power-sharing and abandon its policy of bullying Moscow. The nationalist streak in the Russians can only be curbed by involving them in an international dialogue. The West should also see that the plans of extending NATO eastward is not carried without consulting Russia and try to alleviate its mistrust of the nuclear policy of the western states.
