Armed conflict, 1989-2000
Article Abstract:
This article examines armed conflicts between 1989-2000; 111 had been recorded, 33 of which were still active in 2000, a decrease from the 1998 and 1999 total, and the lowest total in the post-Cold War era. The authors suggest that the decline is not sufficient to support evidence of a further decline, and claim that conflicts have become more complex in terms of the number of actors involved and in the connections between those actors; more of the minor and newer conflicts were resolved than were the long-term, complex conflicts.

Armed conflict, 1989-2002
Article Abstract:
The fact that the wars in Afghanistan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Sri lanka ended, and the wars in Algeria, Angola, Russia, Rwanda dropped down below the 1,000 battle-death threshold, resulted in significant decrease in the number of wars from 11 to 5 in 2002. Though the number of wars has decreased, there is a feeling of insecurity and fear in many parts of the world because of terrorism incidents.
