Trading places: America and Europe in the Middle East

Article Abstract:

European powers like Britain and France were self-confident, interventionist, militaristic and prone to unilateral action for most of the past century in the Middle East, while the Americans were sympathetic to the locals, committed to compromise and strong supporters of international law and the United Nations. The case studies from Iran, Iraq, Algeria and Egypt show that the two sides have effectively traded places, as a result of their changing roles in the international system.

Bush's Middle East vision

The Bush administration does have a Middle East vision based on more than domestic political considerations. America is determined to use its unprecedented power to reshape the Middle East by supporting America's friends in the region and opposing its enemies, as well as seeking to promote democracy.
