Turkish foreign policy under Erbakan
Article Abstract:
The appointment of Necmettin Erbakan as Turkey's Islamist prime minister in 1996 concerns Western nations, such as the US, who are worried about Turkey's foreign policy position. Erbakan's idealistic stance in opposition seems to have softened in government, with Turkey's policy on key issues, such as Cyprus, Turkish-Israeli relations and membership of the European Union, remaining largely unchanged. It can be seen that Erbakan's foreign-affairs policy has not been dogma-led but has been mediated by the practical needs of government.
