United Nations peacekeeping in Europe
Article Abstract:
In early 1995, the United Nations (UN) spent about 70% of its peacekeeping budget in Europe, a far greater percentage than the UN or those who study it would have predicted to be necessary. UN peacekeepers in Europe are involved in preventive deployment, humanitarian relief, conflict mitigation, and the observation of non-UN peacekeeping forces. The implications of such a strong UN presence in Europe for that continent and the UN's abilities in the rest of the world are discussed.

Should UN peacekeeping go 'Back to Basics'?
Article Abstract:
The limits of classical peacekeeping have become over-stretched in the volatile post-Cold War era. Traditional peacekeeping, based on impartiality, consensus and minimal use of force, is losing its relevance and needs redefining. Peacekeeping needs political and financial support for effective judicial interventions to maintain international peace and security. The history of UN peacekeeping forces is discussed.

Europe's role in Asia-Pacific security
Article Abstract:
Europe's involvement in the security of Asia-Pacific has been increasing in recent years, although there is a widely held impression that it no longer has a meaningful security role to play. There are arguments in favour of increased European involvement and these are based on economic interest, global security cooperation, US-European burden-sharing and interdependence and responsibilities.
