What will NATO enlargement cost?
Article Abstract:
The debate on the cost analysis of expanding the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) involves both political and strategic considerations. The focus will be on new members from East-Central Europe, the defence posture and strategy adopted to implement the new Article 5 commitments, and the sharing of financial burden between the old and new members. General cost estimates over a period of 10-15 years are predicted at around $42bn. These cost estimates are modest enough considering that they and spread out over a long period and shared among new and old members.

NATO enlargement and the Baltic states
Article Abstract:
NATO's enlargement plan to encompass East-Central Europe presupposes a coherent policy to deal with the Baltic states. NATO's pre-accession strategy needs to accord priority to the Baltic issue and the stability and security of North-East Europe. Such a policy should address pertinent questions such as Baltic-Nordic multilateral cooperation, NATO and EU enlargement plans to include the Baltic states, and Baltic strategy towards Russia. The success of the NATO enlargement plan hinges largely on the formulation of a credible strategy to deal with the Baltic states.
