The Chechen crisis in evolution: implications for Russian statehood
Article Abstract:
Political settlement through negotiations is a way out of the Chechen crisis. One reason for the crisis in the Chechen Republic is the perpetuation of the no war, no peace state. After the declaration of a quasi-truce, hostilities returned as is seen in the terrorist attack in the town of Kizlyar. Internal and external pressures must be mounted on Russia to adopt the path of negotiations. Economic considerations will favor a negotiated solution of the crisis. Internal strife and continued warfare can erupt in the presence of Russian troops and in case of their withdrawal, which will be very costly.

Russia: changing attitudes toward proliferation of missiles and weapons of mass destruction
Article Abstract:
Russian views on the proliferation of missiles and weapons of mass destruction seem to have changed since the Soviet era due to divergent interests and opinions among government functionaries. However, counter-proliferation measures from the US still evoke negative reactions. Russia must appreciate the imminent security threats from such proliferations. The 1995-1996 elections are likely to influence Russian strategic thinking. A communist regime may evoke a negative response to US measures, while a liberal regime is likely to cooperate with the West.

Military structures in Kazakhstan: aims, parameters, and some implications for Russia
Article Abstract:
Russia is concerned with developments in Kazakhstan particularly in relation to the fate of the Russian ethnic minority, the disposition of former Soviet establishments such as Baikanaur Space Launch Center and other strategic weaponry. Russia is also serious about the reorganization of Kazakh armed forces. The improvement in the relations between the two countries could result in 'Eurasia Unity,' which would be of much importance in understanding of Christian-Muslim relations in the erstwhile Soviet Union.
