The Philippine democratic uprising and the contradictions of neoliberalism: EDSA II
Article Abstract:
This article examines the January 2001 uprising against Philippine president Josef Estrada, dubbed EDSA II because it occurred at the same location as the 1986 Epifanio de los Santos uprising against Ferdinand Marcos. The author critiques neoliberal concepts about democracy, suggesting that the uprising replaced one group of political elites with another, this time lead by Gloria Macapagal Arroyo; criticism of the uprising in Western media is seen as a reflection of the commentators' reluctance to endorse popular uprisings, because they support neoliberal concepts of institution building to promote market stability rather than social change.

Historical blocs and democratic impasse in the Philippines: 20 years after 'people power'
Article Abstract:
A critical analysis of the current political crisis in the Philippines is carried out using a neo-Gramscian focus on the emergence and alternation of hegemonic historical blocs and the state. The Philippines case demonstrates that the turn to democratization over the past 20 years has not reduced antagonistic social and political conflicts in many cases and that more sustained structural changes are needed.

Networks as transnational agents of development
Article Abstract:
The theoretical approaches, which can be used to evaluate the claims of developed networks, are discussed. The networks, regarded as the counter-hegemonic force, must be seen as an ongoing and emergent process for the development of the industry.
