Do social approaches to interpersonal communication constitute a contribution to communication theory?

Article Abstract:

A rejoinder to the utility of social approaches to interpersonal communication is presented. While conceding that societal and cultural aspects are necessary features to communication theory, they are deemed not sufficient by themselves. The extreme focus on social approaches is seen as importing yet another framework or perspective to the study of communication that is outside of the discipline. Social approaches also fail to give a unique communication-focused theory.

Interpersonal commuication as dialogue: a response to the "social approaches" forum

Article Abstract:

The shift from traditional theoretical assumptions about interpersonal communication to those with more social overtones is detailed. A more concrete focus is made on the various kinds of research questions about interpersonal communication that arise from a dialogic/social lens, in contrast to the traditional monologic/psychologic lens. Communication strategies, cognition, self-disclosure and relational bonding are particularly singled out.
