80 commercial arbitration organizations: global federation serves growing need for arbitration
Article Abstract:
Today's global economy makes channels of international dispute resolution more important than ever and efforts to establish such an effective system of international arbitration are finding success. New participants are entering the field and are likely to find guidance and support form the International Federation of Commercial Arbitration Institutions. The federation was founded in 1985 and strives to develop an international network of arbitrators and institutions as well as promote the industry and provide information on changing laws. The federation's first public conference is discussed.

Assessing arbitrator competence: a preliminary regional survey
Article Abstract:
The Industrial Relations Research Assn Rocky Mountain Chapter surveyed members to determine characteristics they felt important to an arbitrator's performance in order to provide arbitrators with some means of evaluation. Twelve arbitrators agreed to be evaluated. The different characteristics were stated negatively and ranked by the non-arbitrator members who completed the survey. Fifty-one characteristics were measured and evaluated.

Survey: the speed and cost of complex commercial arbitrations
Article Abstract:
600 advocates were polled on the efficacy of large, complex commercial arbitrations. Respondents generally believe arbitration of such cases is fair, but that it takes too long and is too expensive. Suggestions to streamline the process include punitive damages, limited discovery, arbitral consent of postponements and standard procedures for pre-hearing conferences.
