Is distance-learning bill balanced? Proposed Copyright Act amendments, which would include distance learning in act's exemption, may not protect all rights
Article Abstract:
The educator has become the content provider in the distance learning concept, and distance learning service providers and product developers and product developers are trying to identify an appropriate licensing protocol to balance the rights of the product's copyright owner with the training recipient's need for content and adequate usage. Laws considered by Congress, including the Digital Era Copyright Enhancement Act, HR 3048, would allow access and use that would lead to more product usage but not give the providers proper compensation.

Law gives copyrights new life; the Copyright Term Extension Act halts the flow of protected works into the public domain
Article Abstract:
The Copyright Term Extension Act creates a 20-year period before US copyrighted works go into the public domain, a law which composers, authors and entertainment industry figures had lobbied hard for. The law applies to all works still in copyright as of its effective date, Oct 27, 1998, but it does not revive copyright protection for works already in the public domain as of that date. A harmonization of US law with that of the European Union will be another result.
