All over bar the shouting
Article Abstract:
The UK economy could overheat in 1997, leading to higher wage inflation. An interest rate increase might be needed to check inflation, despite the strength of the pound and the robust economy. Wage increases have remained steady despite the drop in unemployment, although average earnings rose 5% since 1996. As a result of all these factors, Tony Blair's Labour government may have to adopt a tighter economic policy. A sample of economic forecasters' comments is included.

The lull before the storm
Article Abstract:
The UK economic picture is positive, as headline inflation and unemployment will fall throughout 1996, while average earnings and economic growth are expected to rise throughout 1997. Most experts predict inflation will fall to 2.2-2.4% for the rest of 1996, rising to 3.3% by the end of 1997. Consumer spending and accelerated economic growth will create a small financial boom marked by real income increases and lower unemployment.
