California's crumbling bar; leaders fight to save organization after dues bill is vetoed
Article Abstract:
California Governor Pete Wilson vetoed dues legislation for his state's bar in late 1997 and stripped the association of all but admissions and discipline functions. Leaders of the bar are trying to win support of a compromise bill which would divide the bar into mandatory and voluntary arms and decrease the mandatory bar's dues. The controversy highlights that approval for the dues request of that state's mandatory bar comes from the legislature rather than the supreme court, a unique arrangement.
