A failed system is tearing kids apart
Article Abstract:
The custody battle between the DeBoers, a couple who have raised an adopted child almost since birth and her birth parents, Cara and Dan Schmidt, points up the often-ignored need to consider the best interests of the child in adoption disputes. Jessica's best interests would be served by allowing her to remain with her adoptive parents, who have cared for her almost since birth. The case also points up the need to clarify the rights of unwed fathers in adoption cases, since objections by the birth father, who had been incorrectly identified at first, were what set the case in motion.

Bid to reform adoption laws isn't progress
Article Abstract:
The draft Uniform Adoption Act proposed in 1994 by the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws succeeds in the difficult task of being even worse for children than the laws now on the books. Uniformity in state laws on adoption is badly needed, but the suggested replacement, which has found few converts in the states, was drafted by people who empathize with the adoptive parents and want to facilitate the adoption market, rather than by adoption and childcare professionals.
