Small firms should plan staffing needs, adequate personnel procedures
Article Abstract:
Good support staffs are essential for small law firms, and few lawyers who leave larger firms to start their own have human resources experience. Detailed personnel manuals can do much to defuse possibly damaging situations. Some publishers and consulting firms have boiler-plate manuals on which the firm can elaborate. Before hiring, detailed job descriptions and salary ranges are essential. Checking applicants' skills, employment history and references can help avert future problems, as can probationary periods for new employees.
