Juvenile 'divorce' steals kids' security
Article Abstract:
The federal courts have ruled that the status of minority justifies different treatment than that accorded adults under the law. The Florida decision allowing Gregory K. to 'divorce' his mother ignores the fact that a child's rights under the law are not absolute. Children are judged too immature for many decisions on their futures. In 1989, the Florida Supreme Court held in In re T.W. that teenagers did not require parental consent for abortions, but the court let stand the parent's ability to override a child's wishes in most other cases. Changes to children's rights should come from the legislature.

Segregation's return: does anyone object?
Article Abstract:
THe Million Man March of Oct 16 is in many ways a distraction from a more fundamental neo-segregationist movement, one that would reinterpret the 1954 decision in Brown v Board of Education. US Supreme Court decisions in 1991 and 1995 show support for an end to court-ordered desegregation when schools are no longer actively segregating students. More important, Justice Clarence Thomas and other prominent black lawyers call Brown a mistake, and dangerously try to distinguish separation from inferiority.

Excerpts: Ms. Clinton on kids
Article Abstract:
The discretionary nature of the government's power to intervene in family issues should be overhauled since the likelihood of abuse or the imposition of alien cultural values are great. Decisions to intervene should be overseen by bodies containing members of the constituency where the intervention is to occur. Children should be considered competent to make decisions for their own well being, and their needs should be considered independently of their parents.
