Can ethics officers improve office ethics?

Article Abstract:

More corporations are adding the position of ethics officer (EO). It is estimated that between 15 and 25% of Fortune 500 companies have such a position. Bentley College's Center for Business Ethics and the Dreiford Group held the first ethics officer conference in 1991. All agreed that EOs need to have access to all levels of the organization, avoid being seen as part of upper management, and that their policies must be consistent. Reporting to employees in an already existing, widely-circulated in-house publication was favored, as was incorporating ethics in performance appraisals.
