Can multinationals stage a universal morality play?
Article Abstract:
Multinational corporations in the late twentieth century can be as large as nation-states and are just as powerful, so it behooves them to conduct themselves in a morally responsible manner. They must avoid ethical relativism in their dealings in foreign countries, for instance, by not hiring child labor even though it is culturally acceptable in a given foreign country. Their concern for the bottom line must not blind them to the consequences of their actions for the local populace. Global warming shows that environmentally responsible practices are also imperative.

Will Tokyo's ethics invade Wall Street?
Article Abstract:
Fundamental differences exist between American and Japanese business ethics relating to culture and the nature of governmental regulation. Japanese corporations and their executives are expected to make public shows of remorse when they are guilty of negligence or corruption. In contrast, American executives are punished by the judicial system. However, Japan's industrial policy is more fluid and symbiotic than America's and an overt display of contrition may be a substitute for tough regulation.

Business Ethics and Corporate Governance in Japanese Corporations
Article Abstract:
The Asian financial crisis of 1997 may complicate the implementation of professional codes of ethics in Japan. Japanese corporations may forego the development of business ethics programs in favor of obtaining the highest level of profit they can secure in an intensely competitive environment. This behavior may negatively impact other countries as the global market expands.
