Article Abstract:
Foreign direct investment in China continues to increase and three trends are emerging, acquisitions of existing companies, establishment of holding companies and using direct investment vehicles in project financing transactions. Acquisitions of existing Chinese businesses are becoming more attractive to investors for various reasons. Equity or cooperative joint ventures may be the vehicle to choose for investors engaged in manufacturing, but not for investors seeking more passive roles. Foreign investors form alliances in Mexico; the government's decision to reform investment laws has facilitated global acceptance
Article Abstract:
Mexico decided in the decade starting with the late 1980s to reform its legal and foreign investment structure, which helped it live through recent economic uncertainty and regain acceptance globally. This economic resurgence along with a young, well-educated population with a taste for US products make the country a good choice for US companies thinking of joint ventures in Latin America. Counsel to such companies should study foreign history and culture, not only the law of the foreign investment source. Joint venture forms in Mexico are discussed.
