Crime does not pay, or punishment
Article Abstract:
The current US prison system does not effectively reduce crime but does reproduce barbarism that we strive to eliminate elsewhere. A nationwide trend encourages building new, more secure, more dehumanizing prisons and making punishment more physical and hard to endure. Historically, that does not work. Instead, a tripartite response to crime is needed, with constructive rehabilitation for most, prison for those who we cannot allow in society, and strong social services to help elevate those at risk.

Attorneys as crime victims: prosecutors, defenders feel personal impact
Article Abstract:
Attorneys who have been victims of crime often find their attitudes towards their work profoundly changed. Prosecutors, public defenders and defense attorneys are especially impacted. Some are so overwrought by victimization that they leave the profession. Others report that going through the criminal justice system as a victim has given them important insight into its workings, and that this new knowledge has been valuable in representing clients.
