New strategies add spice to retreat proceedings; organizers can use a variety of methods to capture attorneys' attention during firm retreats
Article Abstract:
There are many techniques to make law firm retreats less boring, including giving attendees a voice in deciding the topics to be covered in the retreat, letting everyone be heard in the breakout sessions and using humor to enliven proceedings. Other techniques include giving the Kolbe Conative Index before the retreat to evaluate attendees' psychological makeup, having a pro-con debate and the use of the maze, a management teamwork teaching game used to enhance trust and leadership.

LBOs have varying effects on law departments
Article Abstract:
The effects of leveraged buy-outs (LBOs) on corporate legal departments depend largely on the financial status of the company after the LBO. Shaky finances may lead to firing of senior attorneys with large salaries and significant cuts in resources. A corporation with sound finances may still cut back, but probably not as much. Outside counsel will feel the effects less, although consultants participating in the LBO may begin to receive some of the outside work.

The companies surveyed included the 100 largest banks, 50 largest savings institutions and 50 largest financial services companies.
