Considering the multiple arch dam: theory, practice and the ethics of safety in a case of innovative hydraulic engineering
Article Abstract:
John S. Eastwood was an early 20th century hydraulic engineer who developed the reinforced concrete multiple arch dam. This design was no longer in use by the time of World War II. Eastwood belonged to the 'structural art' school of thought which believed that practical experience takes precedence over mathematical formulae in engineering design. Other structural engineers of his time gave priority to mathematics and this group perceived Eastwood's designs as weak, while some objected to them on the grounds of visual appearance. All of this is evidence of non-scientific factors in engineering history.

The economics of sustainability
Article Abstract:
A model based on uncertainty provides a more realistic economic view of environmental sustainability than traditional models. Using an uncertainty approach avoids emphasizing benefit costs or market driven explanations of sustainability and focuses on what it costs to maintain flexibility. Other models focus on preserving natural capital or constraining present costs at the expense of future needs, but these models assume the future is known. Including uncertainty avoids this assumption and thus values adaptation to change and balancing economic needs.

Legal regulation of sustainable development in Australia: politics, economics or ethics?
Article Abstract:
A government sustainable development policy must run the political risk of prioritizing values in order to be effective. The mix of values created by equalizing different norms does not lead to a functional environmental policy. The Australian government's 1990 position paper on sustainable development is an example of this failure to decide which values the environmental policy should further. The government has concentrated too heavily on the cost-benefit aspects of sustainable development and given short shrift to social equity concerns.
