Corel launches legal suite and a salvo on Word; with WordPerfect Legal Edition, it seeks to retain edge over Microsoft in legal market
Article Abstract:
The Corel Corp hopes that its new WordPerfect Suite 7-Legal Edition will enable it to retain market share against Microsoft's products. Although business users mainly use Microsft products, this is not true of the legal field, which remains dedicated to WordPerfect. WordPerfect has, however, ceded market share, going from about 87% of the legal market in 1994 to 70% in 1997, with Microsoft gaining about 2% during this period. Legal Edition, targeted at Corel's installed base of DOS and Windows 3.x users and other discrete segments, will, Corel hopes, help it survive. A detailed description of Legal Edition is included.

Not-for-profit legal organizations are wiring up on small budgets
Article Abstract:
Nonprofit legal organizations have managed to automate with small budgets, and some have done so using donations of new technology. The Aid Society of the District of Columbia's technology upgrade offers one example, having used its partnership with private law firms and new relationships with private vendors to turn a $10,000 government grant into an $80,000 system. Executive Director Joseph C. Zengerle states the aim was to obtain everything for free or with heavy discounts.
