Courts should give animals their voice
Article Abstract:
Maturing anti-cruelty laws that protect a person's own animals and those without owners logically suggest the necessity for a court-appointed special advocate. Such as person or organization should have powers similar to those granted the guardian of a minor in cases of parental neglect. That includes authorizing medical care, compelling payment for care, and influencing final placement. Several states, including CT, MI, and OR, have updated their laws to protect animal rights and interests as well as those of the owner.

Board examines new measures to trim costs
Article Abstract:
The National Labor Relations Board is celebrating its 60th anniversary in part by reexamining its own structures and systems in an effort to meet evolving needs. It was born in the Great Depression as the US recognized its own economic transition from local farms to centralized factories. Now, new changes have resulted in the creation of advisory panels of lawyers representing unions and employers, of new administrative law judge procedures, and of streamlined union certification election procedures.

Let safety board give the facts
Article Abstract:
Congress should amend the statute forbidding National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) reports on civil airline accidents from being used as evidence in lawsuits. It makes sense to exclude findings on probable cause, but all factual parts of the reports should be admissible evidence. The NTSB has exclusive authority over accident investigations and therefore factual evidence from NTSB reports is crucial to any lawsuit.
