Craft pay: 1996 survey
Article Abstract:
A 1996 survey of UK craftworkers' wages indicates large variances in pay rates, a small decline in weekly hours, and trend towards salaried positions and multiskilling. Over 30% of these workers receive salaries, and 70% of the employers surveyed pay a common craft rate. Pay rates tend to vary by industry and region. Average weekly hours declined to 37.5 hours from a 1995 average of 38 hours. The survey covers workers in the skilled construction and engineering trades, as well as other types of skilled trades employees.

Skills-based pay: a survey
Article Abstract:
A UK survey on skills-based pay indicated most employers used these plans to make their compensation fairer, pay was often tied to another reward, and approximately half of the employers plan to develop closer ties between pay and skills. While employers had differing definitions of skills-based pay, all linked it to enhanced performance and output. The survey, which covered 50 private sector employers, also showed 19 had formal skills assessment procedures and 22 considered skills in determining employee raises.

Pay prospects for 1995/1996 - a survey of the private sector. (includes related article on commentary) (United Kingdom)
Article Abstract:
UK employers, for the year 1995-6 commencing in Sept 1995, are likely to give pay raises equivalent to or larger than the previous year, according to an Industrial Relations Services survey of 300 managers. A minority of managers expect to give lower pay raises or freeze salaries in 1996. The key influences on 1996 raises are company performance, industry-wide wage scales, and inflation. The survey indicates a prevalence of upward pay pressures, with a decline in previous downward pressures.
