Threat of surge in pay deals recedes
Article Abstract:
A UK survey of pay deals for the quarter ending Dec 1995 indicates increases are likely to remain around 3.5%, despite earlier fears of an upward surge due to inflation. However, an increasing number of settlements exceeded 4% in the period, while 3% appears to be the average bottom rate. Private sector increases are edging upward, with merit-linked raises in the finance sector averaging highest. Most public sector settlements will take place in April 1996.

Pay stays level at 3.5%
Article Abstract:
UK wage statistics for the three-month period ending Jan 1996 show average pay settlement increases appear to have stabilized at 3.5%. The top 25% of the pay settlements averaged 4%. Private sector increases were particularly stronger than the previous year. Phased public sector awards were highlighted by teachers' 3.75% award. Furthermore, most public sector awards are expected to outstrip receding inflation during the rest of 1996.
