First hint of pay movement
Article Abstract:
Pay raises at the end of July, 1995, increased to an average of 3.1%, after averaging 3.0% since the beginning of 1995. Pay increases awarded above the 3.5 % headline inflation rate to a number of key employee groups helped to pull the overall increase rate upwards. Merit increases, averaging 3.6% overall and 4% in finance companies, also helped pull the overall rate higher. Three-quarters of the increases in private sector salaries topped the 3.0% level by the beginning of August, 1995.

Survey of pay in local government
Article Abstract:
Local governments in the UK are revamping their salary systems by introducing incentives such as merit pay and compulsory competitive tendering, or outside bidding. Although national pay agreements are still the system used by most local governments, the trend is building toward performance-linked pay and skills-based pay. Bonus and profit surplus share schemes are also increasingly common.
